How do I replace my broken iPad screen?
We understand how deeply frustrating it can be when you break the LCD screen on your iPad. Such frustration is often compounded by the fact that Apple tend to charge hefty fees for any, (and all,) repairs. Tthough not the simplest of tasks, when armed with the correct knowledge and the relevant tools, you should be able to change your damaged iPad screen yourself, in the process, saving valuable time and money.
Replacing a broken iPad screen
Step one
Before you begin, make sure a.) that you have backed up all of the data on your iPad, (a good idea when completing any form of repair,) and b.) that your machine is switched off. Next, you’ll need to gather together several flat edged implements, (such as debit cards or guitar plectrums,) opening tools and a small screwdriver. Once you’re reading to begin, lift up our iPad and use one of the flat edged implements, (or an opening tool,) to gently prise the front glass away from the back of the machine. Once you have separated the front glass from the back of the machine, insert a flat-edged implement in the gap to ensure that the parts don’t fuse together again. Repeat this step, working your way around the iPad. Just a quick note: the glass on the front of the iPad is held in place, (on all sides bar the right, which is held together by tabs,) by clips. You’ll need to undo these to gain entry to the LCD screen inside.
Step two
Once you have completed all of these steps, you should be able to lift the front glass up, (taking care to lift it from the bottom, rather than the top.) Having lifted the front glass up, you should see three, distinct cables. You’ll need to disconnect all three of these cables, (using an opening tool to detach both the touchscreen and the light sensor cables.)
Step three
Once you have disconnected all three of these cables, you should be in a position to remove the front glass from the main body of your iPad. Next, remove the board which houses the light sensor from the inner-back of the bezel surrounding the front panel. You’ll also need to disconnect the ribbon like touch-screen cable.
Step four
Next, remove the screws at the bottom of the iPad, (near the “Home” button,) and set them aside safely. You’ll also need to disconnect the display clip and set it aside safely so that it, (like the sensory board,) can be attached to your newly bought LCD screen. Proceed by removing all of the other screws holding your damaged iPad LCD screen in place. Ensure that you have located, removed and safely set aside all of the screws holding the damaged screen in place before continuing. Next, take an opening tool or an implement with a flat edged surface and use it to gently prise the broken LCD screen from the frame in which it sits. If the damage to your screen is extensive, remember to take care when completing this step, so as to avoid injury. Work your way around the edges of the LCD screen, gently, (but firmly,) prising it from its frame as you go. Once you have completed these steps, you should be in a position to lift the damaged screen from the surrounding plastics. Once you have freed the screen from the frame in which it sits, check to make sure that it is not being held in place by any more strips of adhesive.
Step five
Attach the clips, (and the sensory board,) that you removed from your damaged iPad screen, to your new replacement. To fit your replacement LCD screen, (and to complete the repair,) all you need to do is perform the above instructions in reverse.
